Fathoming A Cave
2014, Sutro Cave, Ocean Beach

Fathoming A Cave was a collaborative performance with musician Laura Steenberge which took the form of an after dark investigation into echolocation at Sutro Cave in San Francisco. We led a group through from one end of the cave to the other, using a 75 foot handmade rope to 'sound' the cave, or measure, as we moved through it. We discussed the lightless navigation of bats and whales while exploring the practice of sounding and low frequency vibration. Talks about history of the cave, whale falls, sonic moth testicles, the size of sound, and the historic practice of measuring depth were all accompanied by performances by Laura on her upright bass in the complete darkness of the cave while waves crashed on the rocks outside.
