CARRIE HOTT

I create paintings, objects, and installations that utilize still life in combination with narrative. Often, I recreate objects and scenarios that are common and everyday.  Re creating allows me to intensify the inherent ethereal qualities that I find in my subject matter, such as notions of need, security, anxiety, faith, and hope, and provides the viewer with a space in which there is room to contemplate the familiar. In effect, I strive to create a visual representation of a longing that exists in every day life.

Ultimately, I am interested in the tendency to create meaning, order, or a sense of connectedness in life through sentiment, superstition, or ritual, especially in areas or environments that seem disconnected or ‘not special’. I wonder how objects and scenarios assist people in finding meaning and direction in otherwise insignificant places, and what drives the need to feel connected to something larger than oneself because the idea of randomness is so frightening. Further, I wonder how art making is a quest for discovering or creating meaning, which I constantly consider in my practice.
